The first time I saw Neuschwanstein Castle I was amazed. Not only it looks like a fairy tale castle itself, but it is also located in one of the most wonderful regions of Germany. High mountains (sometimes covered with snow), gorgeous forests and stunning green lakes. There is no wonder why Walt Disney was inspired by it when he though about Cinderella’s castle. So, if you are thinking about having a Neuschwanstein Castle wedding, you are not the first person to be enchanted by such an incredible beauty.
A little bit of history behind the Neuschwanstein Castle
The construction of the castle began in 1869, by the orders of king Ludwig II of Bavaria. The shy dreamer, who had none of the typical characteristics of a popular king, was lost in his fantasy world. After all, Bavaria, allied with Austria, had lost a war against the expanding Prussia. And the consequences? Ludwig II ended up as a constitutional monarch, with not so much freedom of action. That is why he decided to build a fantasy world around him in which – far away from reality – he could feel as he was a real king. His historic, poetic and ideal interpretation of his role as king was finally his downfall. Possibly, he even preferred to die rather than return to reality. And that is what happened…
Seven weeks after the death of King Ludwig II in 1886, Neuschwanstein was opened to the public. Nowadays, Neuschwanstein is one of the most famous castles in Europe. Every year more than one million people visit “the Cinderela Castle” in Germany.
